These Valentine cupcake toppers are so cute and easy to do! And as a bonus, you only need a few things to make them.
Roll out fondant logs of your different colors and twist them together. Roll into a log and fold in half. Twist that together, roll out into a log and fold in thirds. Repeat until it’s as blended as you’d like.
Roll into a bit of a spiral, pat to flatten out a bit, and roll out, using a bit of cornstarch to prevent sticking.
Cut out your hearts (2” across is perfect for cupcake toppers).
royal icing
Using a stand mixer or a hand mixer, combine 1 cup of powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons pasteurized egg whites and 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar. Beat until stiff peaks form.
Using a piping bag and #4 or #5 tip, practice the heart design on wax paper a few times. If the icing is too thick to pipe smoothly, take the tip off and squeeze the icing back into the bowl and thin with a teeny bit of water. Honestly, unless you pipe with royal icing a LOT, trial and error is part of the gig because the right consistency is a subtle difference. Just takes a moment to adjust though!
Pipe the design onto the hearts.
Using a damp, soft paintbrush, tap the little peak at the end of each line of icing to smooth it.
Let set overnight, and they will be ready to put on top of a swirl of buttercream on your cupcakes! (This chocolate cake recipe makes amazing ones!). They can also be done in advance, weeks if you like…just keep them loosely covered, at room temperature.
Happy baking!!
I love the marbled fondant! So fun 😆
